William Hickling, 1878

We often get asked questions and learn stories about villagers in the past.
This sad tale was sent to us recently from a lady in Oakham:

Her great grandfather William Hickling was a groom gardener at a house [unknown] in Easton on the Hill. On the 2nd July 1878 he was tragically killed when he was thrown from a horse.  He was just 26 years old and left his pregnant widow and small son [the lady's grandfather].
Her grandfather's first job was as an ostler at The George Hotel in Stamford.
William's widow Mary Ann Hickling [nee Laud or Lord] eventually moved to Coventry to live with her younger son and his wife.
William is buried in our churchyard.
