Easton on the Hill - History Group

Programme dates for 2024

Meeting are on the third Monday of the month

The Polish flag is now displayed over the period they would have been in Arnhem 80 years ago.

We would like to thank the Parish Council Trees & Greens Committee for the appropriate red and white flowers of the Salvia ‘Hot lips’ which have been blooming all summer.

We have exciting news. The History Group project with Ben Hooson is finished. Cheryl Dobbs has transcribed the diaries of Percy Hooson from three notebooks he made during his time on the Somme during WW1.

These have just been published as a fascinating book at the cost of £10.

Rev P Hooson was the vicar of Easton on the Hill between 1912 - 1932 and was an amazing character.

Please let me know if you would like a copy.

The Polish War Memorial at Spring Close

The dedication of the new Polish War Memorial took place on Saturday 23rd September, 2023. This was the culmination of lots of hard work by several villagers, (co-ordinated largely by Ian himself), the Parish Council, and representatives of the Polish living history group, "First to Fight", who commemorate the 1st Polish Paratroop Brigade. The event included all day activities, largely run by the "First to Fight" Group, and we hosted many visitors to the village, including some from Poland, and some VIPs from the Polish Community in the UK.

Polish TV, local BBC stations, along with www.rutlandandstamfordsound.co.uk/  covered the event, other media was invited.

We did not advertise this widely but of course we hoped that the village will turn out to welcome our guests and honour the memory of some very brave men who spent time in Easton on the Hill during WW2 and fought bravely in Operation Market Garden in particular. A report of the dedication, can be found HERE
